How can you relate to this book? Explain using a text to text, text to self or text to world connection.

After reading “My Sisters Keeper”, I realize that I connect to this book in numerous ways. The most significant connection I have with this book, is the family’s struggle with cancer, an illness I relate to personally, morally and ethically.                      Cancer was introduced to me two years ago. When I was in eighth grade, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I can make a text to self connection with Anna, I was confused at first and I didn’t understand what would happen. Just like the Fitzgerald’s, I had a hard time dealing with what my mother was going through and there were times where I also had to give up time to take care of her. I can also make a text to self connection with Sara, who had to stay long hours at the hospital with Kate. Although the cancer was difficult to deal with, my family and I got through it with many morals trailing behind us.
I also relate to this book morally. From my experience with cancer, I learned to be grateful to be living. Our lives can end at any moment and not enough people realize that everyone will get sick and die someday. I learned that I should take each day one at a time and accentuate my purpose in this world. This also taught me to appreciate the people I have around me. Family and friends are the only support we have around us and it’s always important to treat them like they deserve to be treated and respect them while they’re still living.
While reading the novel, I also found another text to self connection with the actions of the characters in this story. I am mostly like Sara, always trying to help Kate and helping her with everything she needs. I see a lot of myself in Sara which allowed me to get an insight of how I would act in her position, if my child was sick. My sibling reminds me more of Jesse, she doesn’t try to get involved much, and prefers staying out of things.            My connections to the situation, characters and morals of the story have also helped me realize that I am not the only one who played such an important role in my family during the struggle of cancer.
            What makes your book?
``My Sisters Keeper`` is such a well known book because it’s informative and intriguing yet touching. I learned so much about leukemia from reading this book alone. APL is way worse than any other cancer I`ve heard of, and Kate is extremely lucky to have survived it. I learned that leukemia means endless trips to the hospital, and many hemorrhage and accidents can happen at any time. I also think this book is very well known because it’s a page turner; people want to know how this family ends up through their struggle and what happens to Kate in the end. I think it`s also such a famous book because plenty of people can relate to it. Everyone knows someone who suffered from cancer; this illness makes a great impact on millions of lives. Many people must`ve looked towards this book as a sign of hope, that things do get better and that anyone can survive their cancer journey.
Finally, it`s the sacrifice that also makes this book so touching. The fact that Anna spent all those years saving her sister each time she needed her is true heroism. Campbell`s willingness to donate his kidney in the end, and the support Kate`s parents offered showed the power of love and the true impact of heroism in the story. It`s the Fitzgerald`s family struggle together along with the assisting characters, conflicts and the unique themes that make this story especially relatable, and truly a one of a kind read.

Does this book remind me of any other texts, movies, songs? T.V Shows? Why?

“My Sisters Keeper” reminds me of certain texts, movies and T.V shows which all have cancer related aspects. First, this book reminds me of another book called ‘Before I die’ which is the story about a sixteen year old girl Leukemia patient who finds out she is soon to die. She then makes up a list of things to do before she dies and spends all her time trying to accomplish them in a matter of months. This story is similar to the novel because they both have a related theme. “Living in the moment” plays an important role in this book and “My Sisters Keeper” alike.
This novel also reminds me of a movie called ‘The Fault in Our Stars” which is based off of the well known novel that portrays the struggle of living a cancer-invaded life. The two relate because the main character, Hazel Grace, is also a teen who is trying to live a normal life and live to the fullest of her ability. She and Kate also share something even more important, a saviour. Hazel Grace has Augustus Waters to keep her happy and enjoy life while she still can, and Kate has Sara who always tries to make the best of every situation. Evidently, even the endings have the same ironic outcome. In `My Sisters Keeper` Anna ends up dying of an accident, and in `The Fault in Our Stars`, Augustus dies suddenly and unexpectedly, both endings leave the reader just as shocked.
This novel is lastly related to a TV Show called “Chasing Life``. It focuses on this woman named April who is an aspiring journalist and like Sara; she has a chaotic life with her career and family. One day she finds out she has leukemia and everything falls downhill from there. This TV show relates the book in several ways. April and Kate both have leukemia, April is trying to make the best out of the situation and so is Sara. It`s interesting to see although they both have completely different lives, they`re illness connect them somehow. There are so many more other texts and movies that relate to cancer available to let others know they`re not alone during the struggle, the media also gives patients a way to cope with their sickness.

What does this novel remind you about life and cancer, and about what can happen in the near future?

While reading the novel ``My Sisters Keeper``, I was always reminded how precious life truly is. The first thing the novel reminded me of is how lucky we are to be living life, regardless of any illness. Cancers and other complications are only obstacles trying to stop you from living your life and doing what you want. Although they may make you weak physically, you should always remain strong and positive mentally and spiritually. As I read the novel, I was also reminded why I participate in cancer funds and Relay for Life. I can represent all the individuals who never got a chance to remain strong or positive.
Proceeding, this novel also reminded me to never be afraid of what can come next. Live in the present and don’t think too much about tomorrow because then you`re too busy thinking about the negatives. I was reminded to focus on today because tomorrow is definitely not guaranteed and remain focused only on your journey, no matter what obstacles come by you. Kate is a perfect example of this. Nobody thought she`d make it to graduation, or conquer her cancer, but she did. This also reminds me that anything can seem impossible or unlikely; you just have to prove it’s possible. Just as Kate proved surviving was possible, how Sara proved perseverance will get you somewhere, and just as Campbell and Julia proved that there are people out there to support you in times of need. All of the characters from the novel all reminded me of these important things that tend to be forgotten in times of sorrow. After finishing the book I also realized anything could happen to myself, and when it does happen I`ll have to be ready for it.  Finally, as I read the novel, I was also reminded why I participate in cancer funds and Relay for Life. I can represent all the individuals who never got a chance to remain strong or positive. I do it for myself, my brothers, my sisters, parents, grandparents, and so on. After reading Kate`s story, I`m reminded at how much I have yet to impact people, and strive for a cancer free future.
