The Storyteller (2013)
What inspired Jodi to write 'My Sisters Keeper"? Jodi always thought she was living something like a double life. Shes written stories involving conflicts such as teen suicide, sexual abuse.. etc, but she never expected to encounter one herself. At age 5, her middle son Jake had been diagnosed with cholesteatoma, he had a tumour in his ear. As the tumour progressed, she was told that her son had another tumour in his other ear. Jodi realized she was lucky because at least Jake would survive, the worst that could happen would be losing his hearing. Years later, she wrote My Sisters Keeper. At first, she wanted the story to be in a first person omniscient perspective, but she realized she wanted readers to know how difficult it is for other family members too. The mother of the story, Sara is inspired by Jodi's own feelings and actions while her son was sick.
